Questions To Ask Your Coach as a Beginner Boxer

Booking your first boxing classic is exciting! And, for most, a little intimidating.

Whether you’ve joined Bil Sha Boxing Club to get fit or to chase competition goals, asking the right questions early helps you build a strong foundation.

We’ve rounded up a few of the most common beginner questions our coaches get, and how they can help you feel more confident in your training.

Look out for the expert insights from Costa, our Club Manager and Head Coach!

1.  Can I Box Without Sparring?

This question is more common than you’d expect! Especially for those who want to get fit rather than jump in the ring.

Many beginner classes start with fitness and technique before stepping into light sparring.

Ask your coach how they structure training sessions for accurate insights. At Bil Sha Boxing Club, we focus on skills and the basics for beginners. Sparring comes later, and at your own pace.

Costa Says: Definitely, most of our classes are no contact, they are designed for you to get the same workout a fighter would during their camps!

2. Is Boxing a Full-Body Workout?

Absolutely. Boxing works your legs, core, shoulders, and arms while improving cardio and coordination.

Your coach can show you drills that strengthen your whole body,  even before you throw a single punch.

Costa Says: I haven’t found a training session that can push me as much as a boxing workout does, it combines all kinds of different muscle groups and fitness focuses.

3. Which Age Is Too Late To Start Boxing?

It’s never too late to box! Many adults start boxing in their 30s, 40s, or beyond.

If this question is on your mind, ask your coach how to tailor sessions to your fitness level. At Bil Sha Boxing Club, we welcome all ages and abilities. We don’t care if it’s your first time wearing the gloves!

Costa Says: I assume this is a rhetorical question! We can start boxing at any age and can box until any age. We have members in their 60’s, 70’s and above!

4. What Are the Golden Rules of Boxing?

We see this question a lot online, but it’s crucial to note that every coach has their golden rules.

Usually, they cover: keep your hands up, move your feet, and protect yourself at all times.

However, it’s still a good idea to ask your coach which fundamentals they emphasise. This way, you’ll be on the same wavelength.

Costa Says: Hands up and bring them back to your chin after every punch. That would be my first focus for beginners starting boxing – And don’t forget to breathe!

5. How Often Should a Beginner Train?

When it comes to training, consistency beats intensity. If you do too much, too fast, you risk burning out.

Ask your coach how many sessions fit your schedule and recovery. Most beginners start with 2–3 sessions a week to gradually build fitness and technique.

Costa Says: I think for beginners I would recommend 3 times per week, with a day’s rest in between. Try not to do too much too soon as we will be working muscles we haven’t done before, it’s important to rest inbetween sessions. Although it’s difficult when that boxing bug gets you!!

6. What Should I Eat Before and After Training?

Good nutrition supports your energy and recovery, no matter which sport you’re practising.

Ask your coach or personal trainer about good pre-workout snacks (like fruit or oats) and post-training meals rich in protein and carbs.

However, remember that your boxing coach is not a nutritionist. If you want genuine meal plans, seek out a professional in the field.

Costa Says: Everyone is different so certain meals help people individually. Without over complicating, I would recommend a light meal 90 minutes prior to training, a balanced meal of proteins, carbs and fats – Hydrate before, during and after! After training I would go with something similar again, but also something to replenish your salts / electrolytes.

7. How Can I Overcome Nerves Before The First Session?

First off, remember that it’s normal to feel nervous before trying something new!

Don’t hold the nerves in! Coaches expect a little nervousness and know how to make you feel at ease. It can be helpful to chat with your coach about what to expect in your first class. They’ll walk you through the basics and make sure you feel comfortable.

Everyone starts somewhere, and your coach’s job is to help you settle in and enjoy the process.

Costa Says: Focus on your breathing, and smile! It’s absolutely okay to be nervous, we totally understand it, at BSBC we are a community and we welcome that, everyone is here together. Hopefully our environment can settle those when you arrive and start.
