Boxing is an excellent way to improve your fitness, boost your endurance, and sharpen your mental discipline. Whether you’re aiming to compete or simply want a fun new workout, ensuring you have the appropriate boxing equipment is critical. Not only does this enhance your performance, but it will keep you safe while you give it your all in the ring.
Most sports require special equipment, and knowing what you need before you start is always helpful. In this guide, we’ll give you an overview of what to invest in and where you can buy boxing supplies in London.

What Equipment Do Beginners Need To Start Boxing?
If you’re experimenting with boxing for the first time, you might not want to dive in and spend lots of money until you’re 100% sure. We get this! However, there are some non-negotiable pieces of equipment you need to ensure you’re safe.
Here are the most important boxing equipment pieces for beginners:
- Boxing Gloves — Boxing gloves protect your hands from injuries. They also cushion them from impact when you’re sparring. Typically, beginners start with 12oz or 14oz gloves, but our team is here to help you choose the right ones.
- Mouthguards — Even if you’re not facing an opponent, it’s good to get into the habit of weathering a protective mouthguard.
- Hand Wraps — Hand wraps protect the smaller bones in your wrists and hands. They should be worn underneath the gloves.
Those are the main three pieces of equipment for newbies. You may also want to invest in boxing shoes when you start working on your footwork and a skipping rope to build up your cardio. But they’re not essential for your first few sessions.
Intermediate Boxing Equipment
Once you’re familiar with the sport and are ready to give it your all or aim to become an amateur boxer, you can elevate your boxing equipment with some intermediate additions. These are only necessary if you progress past the beginner level in your boxing training.
- Headgear — You might want to invest in your own headgear if you spar frequently. If not, you’ll have to rely on your club’s stock.
- Focus Mitts and Pads — Mitts and pads are helpful when working on speed and accuracy. They are great for committed boxers but not necessary for beginners.
